March Break at Dixon Hall Music School – Welcome Back Campers!

Since the start of the pandemic, Dixon Hall Music School held its first music camp in two years. Twelve youths were invited to join a March Break Music Camp at our Bill Graham Youth Centre, where over the course of the week, students learned dialogue and music, culminating in the production of Mamma Mia!.

Together with staff, the young campers worked on all aspects of the production including sets, design, music and choreography. Students were able to memorize their lines and learn all the music within five music-filled days! We were also able to give one of our piano students, Ella, an opportunity to earn volunteer hours as an accompanist – you can catch her playing instrumental in the background!

Huge thanks to Adam Wicks (our voice teacher), Snowzei Chau (the show director and assistant accompanist) and Daniel Shiekh (our digital guru who captured the performance), we couldn’t have done it without your guidance and help. Check out the show below – we’re so proud of our youth for their first in-person performance since 2019!

The Music School would like to thank the Minstrel Foundation for giving our students this tremendous opportunity. Thanks to your support and generosity, our students were able to safely re-establish connections with our staff and their neighbourhood friends, and most importantly, have some fun.

Testimonials from our Youth

"I had a lovely time at the Dixon Hall 2022 March Break Camp. After several years without camp, this one had really reminded me of that nostalgic camp feeling; eating with many others at a table, playing games together, and sharing plenty of laughs." – SiYa Luo

"I love working on productions and plays for my school so I was really interested when Dixon Hall was going to put on Mamma Mia!. I remember rushing to read the script and watch the movie the night before camp. At first, I was definitely nervous and anxious if it was going to be finished, from sets to singing and choreography, there was just so much to do within 5 days! But we definitely stayed focused throughout the week and with hard work, memorization, and good food for motivation, the musical is brought to life and I feel proud of everyone who is a part of it."  – Jin
