Dixon Hall Hosts MIRA Snacks and Science Event on Healthy Aging and Navigating Health Information

On June 4, community members gathered at the Toronto Public Library for an engaging afternoon of learning, conversation, and connection at the MIRA Snacks and Science event. Co-hosted by Dixon Hall, the Toronto Public Library, and the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), the session featured Dr. Milena Head, Professor of Information Systems at McMaster University.
The event focused on an increasingly important topic: how to navigate the vast amount of health information available online and make informed decisions about what to trust. As misinformation continues to spread across digital platforms, understanding how to evaluate health information has become an essential skill for people of all ages.
Drawing on real-world examples, Dr. Head shared practical strategies for identifying reliable sources, recognizing misleading information, and building confidence when searching for health-related resources online. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences, leading to thoughtful discussions about digital literacy and healthy aging.
Beyond the presentation, the afternoon provided an opportunity for community members to connect over snacks and conversation, creating a welcoming space for learning and engagement.
Thank you to Dr. Milena Head for sharing her expertise, and to our partners at the Toronto Public Library and the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging for their collaboration in making this event possible. Together, we continue to create opportunities that empower older adults and strengthen community well-being through education and connection.
