Dixon Hall Receives Peggy Kurtin Award for Heritage Restoration at 504–508 Parliament Street

Dixon Hall has received the Cabbagetown Preservation Association’s Peggy Kurtin Award for the heritage restoration of 504–508 Parliament Street, marking a major milestone the revitalization of these Cabbagetown homes.
The award celebrates excellence in restoration and streetscape improvements in Cabbagetown, recognizing Dixon Hall’s work to preserve the architectural character of the Parliament Street properties while creating safe, stable, and supportive housing for people who need it most.
“At Dixon Hall, we believe strongly in a housing-first philosophy that stable housing is the foundation for health, dignity, safety, and long-term wellbeing” said Janet Lambert, Interim CEO of Dixon Hall.
In a neighbourhood with a long history of rooming houses operating within heritage homes, this restoration highlights the importance of preserving both community character and dignified places to live. Dixon Hall partners with Reconnect Health Services to provide wraparound supports that promote tenant health, well-being, housing stability, quality of life, independence and belonging.
Preserving the architecture and heritage of Cabbagetown was central to the project from the beginning. Dixon Hall worked with ERA Architects, which served as lead architect, heritage consultant, and landscape architect, the restoration was guided by an approach that respected the character and integrity of the heritage-listed properties while introducing modern upgrades for safety, comfort, and durability.
“This project reflects what is possible when public, private, and nonprofit partners come together around a shared vision” said Haydar Shouly, Director of Housing and Shelter Services.
This partnership celebrates the original architecture, ensuring that these homes will contribute to the historic streetscape of Cabbagetown for years to come.
The recognition also reflects Dixon Hall’s commitment to supportive housing that strengthens both individual wellbeing and neighbourhood connection. As the Parliament Street project continues to welcome tenants, Dixon Hall remains committed to ongoing engagement with neighbours, businesses, elected officials, and community partners to help foster a safe, well-maintained, and connected neighbourhood.
