Conversations with our Youth Incubator Graduates: Jabarry and Shanette

Name: Jabarry Grant

How did you first hear about the Youth Incubator Program?

I first heard about this program off of the internet. Then a friend told me about it as well, so I asked my caseworker to get me a referral to the program.

Why did you decide to join this program?

I wanted to know more about the hospitality field so I joined this program to better set myself up for the field.

What was your favourite part of the Youth Incubator?

My favourite part was meeting people in person, cooking together in the kitchen, showing off our skills, and learning from each other!

What are some of the things you learn or practice in class?

Denzil was an amazing teacher. When I first came here, I thought I knew how to properly hold a knife but Denzil showed me a better way that was more comfortable. I can’t even begin to list all the things we learned but this is a program that anyone can join and learn lots of stuff.

To whom would you recommend this program?

I would recommend it to anyone. It’s a nice program where you can learn how to put certain dishes together and things that we never knew could go so well together, like different spices. You can learn all of this through this program.

Name: Shanette Culzac

How did you first hear about the Youth Incubator Program?

I heard about this program from the internet and decided to join for the experience and the knowledge to one day work in a hotel.

What has been your favourite part of the program?

My favourite part has been the hands-on experience and social aspects that we get in class

What are some of the things that you’ve done or learned in class?

We do a bit of everything. We learned about preparation, methods in which you do things, and hygiene/cleanliness.

To whom would you recommend this program?

I would recommend this program to someone who really enjoys cooking and is interested in the culinary field.
